Fasting: Lose weight & improve your health - FAST!
Chances are that if you are reading this, you have either already discovered the health phenomenon that is starting to sweep the diet and wellness world regarding the fast way to lose weight and improve your health. It's fasting, and it is far from being a fad!
Did you know that fasting is the most ancient form of healing with a range of incredibly powerful health benefits in addition to incredible weight loss results?
Furthermore, fasting and the resulting effect of 'autophagy' - (meaning 'eating of self') has been scientifically proven and Nobel Prize-winning regarding improving health conditions such as Diabetes type 2, cardiovascular disease and the ability to lose weight almost effortlessly - and fast! (More about this below).
And fasting is also proving beneficial in helping to improve concentration, extend life, prevent Alzheimers, prevent insulin resistance and even reverse the entire aging process. In other words, fasting is a cheap (free!) and amazing way to make an incredible impact on our health.
According to research conducted by neuroscientist Mark Mattson and others, cutting your energy intake by fasting several days a week might help your brain ward off neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, while at the same time improving memory and mood. John Hopkins Health Review
What is Fasting?
In a nutshell fasting means means no food. This is not to be confused with starving or an eating disorder such as anorexia.
Fasting means that your only intake is water/clear drinks (not diet ones with sweetener) for a specific amount of time.
No diet foods. No calorie counting. No hours on the treadmill killing yourself at the gym (although obviously exercise IS important!)
...and a world of incredible weight loss and improved health benefits through fasting awaits you.
Born to fast, Baby...!
Think about it. We didn't evolve with a convenience store, restaurant, fast food joint or grocery store minutes away from us. We had to forage and hunt for our food, just like all other animals on this planet. And sometimes those hunts weren't successful.
The result? Periods of eating and periods of fasting.
Our bodies have not evolved from our hunter gatherer ancestors. And far from the unsubstantiated advice, we do not need to eat on a 24/7 cycle with 'breakfast being the most important meal of the day'.
In fact the opposite is true, with evidence pointing towards breakfast contributing to weight gain.
Eating most definitely was not based on 3 (high carb, and generally highly processed) meals a day and 2 snacks to boot! Let alone grazing throughout the day...
This constant eating cycle has contributed to our current obesity/diabetes/cancer/insulin resistance epidemic. And these highly processed foods full of chemicals and GMO? They not only add to these health epidemics, but create a whole other one - toxic overload syndrome.
FIND OUT HOW TOXIC YOU ARE BY TAKING THIS EASY 8 QUESTION QUIZ...
It takes under 1 minute to do...and could change your life!
There is GOOD News!
We can easily, cheaply (aka free!) and effortlessly reverse these epidemics.
How? By bringing back fasting.
Please note: It is important to fast (and re-feed) properly. Therefore, please ensure that you educate yourself thoroughly before commencing fasting. I am not a doctor. Please do not take the information in this article as medical advice.
Fasting is not for everyone, therefore seek medical guidance (and be prepared for your doctor to look at you like you have lost your mind - most of them are uneducated about fasting and are around 50 years behind scientific studies). Arm yourself with information and facts is my best suggestion!
Please see the resource section below for books, support and tools for fasting.
Personal Fasting Experience
Firstly, I hold up my hand to say that I struggle with food. I love it, and it loves me (my hips, waist, thighs, my waking thoughts...). I am addicted to sugar and carbs.
Fasting has been (and continues to be) a truly incredible experience for both me and my husband.
In conjunction with these 3 fasting biohacks fasting has been truly revolutionary and life-changing for us both.
- Incredible weight loss (12lbs in under 1 week for me, 2 sizes down for hubby and me in under a month)
- Food freedom (no waffling about 'is this my 20% treat food?')
- Improved energy
- Improved concentration
- Reduced inflammation/pain
- Saved money (less food to buy!)
- More time to do other things
How We Fast
The fasting methods we use vary, with no 'set in stone' regimen.
We tend to do a type of intermittent fasting (IF) called OMAD (One Meal A Day), and a few times a week do an extended 36-42 hour water fast.
However, we have shaken things up a bit and do a TEA FAST with Te Divina Detox Tea. Using this tea is bio-hacking at its best! This truly awesome adaptogenic tea has 0 carbs, 0 fat, 0 protein and 0 calories.
This means that it doesn't break the fast, gets us into ketosis faster in addition to the amazing ingredients known to fight cancer, improve cardiovasuclar and liver health and much more.
Ps. Te Divina also reduces carb cravings and hunger, too. An added bonus!
Autophagy: The Nobel Prize-winning reason why fasting rocks
As I mentioned above, fasting is far from being a fad. In fact the scientist who brought fasting into the scientific community and won a Nobel Prize for it was Yoshinori Ohsumi in 2016 for his discovery of 'autophagy'.
Autophagy means 'self-eating', is an amazing cellular renewal process by which our cells reuse their own components to release energy, and improve cell regeneration achieved through fasting - on top of losing weight!
Fasting has a vast array of truly impressive health benefits and if you are looking to lose weight? All I can say is WOW. Truly impressive results for me, hubby and thousands of other people.
Fasting: The ancient way to heal
"Our food should be our medicine. Our medicine should be our food. But to eat when you are sick is to feed your sickness." Hippocrates
Far from being the latest, weight loss fad, fasting is proving to be a highly effective means of losing weight, improving health, gaining muscle and feeling great.
In fact, It is a time-tested and ancient tradition for cleansing, purification and the treatment of ailments and disease.
Ancient Greek thinkers Plato and his student Aristotle were also staunch supporters of fasting. Furthermore, most religions also incorporate fasting (Ramadan, Yom Kippur, Ash Wednesday as a few examples) into their practices.
Fasting Isn't Starving (or an eating disorder)!
It is really important for you (and probably your friends, family and most likely your doctor) that fasting is NOT starving. Here's some important tips/info to have to hand:
- You DO know when your next meal is going to be (when you are really starving, you don't).
- Chances are you DO have fat on your body that is used as energy/fuel to live on (when you are starving you have no fat).
- You ARE going to eat. You are simply delaying your eating.
- Humans were not designed to eat 3 meals and 2 snacks a day! (Let alone all the processed crap!)
- You are able to get on with daily life (in fact your concentration and energy levels will most likely increase)
PS. Shock of shocks, hunger pangs in day 4 of a fast are no different than 2 hours after having a Chinese dinner! #fact Did you know that when your stomach is rumbling it isn't a sign of hunger?!
Truly Amazing Fasting Inspiration...
Check out the video below for someone who is truly inspirational regarding incredible weight loss from over 500lbs.
Firstly, I am definitely not suggesting or encouraging you to fast for 150 days!! What I am sharing with you is that people do fast for longer periods of time, and not only are they still alive and kicking, they are doing amazingly well regarding improved health, weight loss and overall well-being
Types of Fasting
There's a wide range of different varieties of fasts ranging from the popular intermittent fast (IF) called 18:6 (18 hours fasting daily with a 6 hour eating window), water fasting, AF (alternate day fasting), OMAD, extended fasting and 5:2 fasts. Here's 6 popular ways to do Intermittent Fasting.
Now...just to really confuse you...Dr Valter Longo, from the University of Southern California and a fasting expert, states that the terminology for intermittent fasting isn't actually fasting at all - it's time restricted feeding. (TRF).
Dr Longo says that the term 'intermittent fasting' (IF) is not appropriate unless the period of fasting is over 24 hours.
Therefore, most IF plans should be called time restricted feeding, or TRF. Dr Longo suggests a window of 12 hours without eating every day is a form of TRF, not IF. Dr Longo also recommends 2 meals a day and a small snack that’s low in sugar.
Fasting that Fits You
As with everything in life, it is important to do something that not only is enjoyable but also fits your needs - and your lifestyle.
Fasting shouldn't be a nightmare or dreaded. In fact, most people look forward to their extended fasts (36hours +) because they find it freeing (no meals to worry about), improved concentration and energy. (The key to hitting this sweet spot is getting into ketosis before going into the fast for most people...).
Finding a fasting style that fits you and your routine is obviously important, as is timing a fast. For example, don't decide to do a 36hour fast when you have planned to have a night out with the girls! That's just a recipe (or fast!) designed for disaster!
It also opens yourself up for criticism by friends and family (who are NOT educated and will most likely think that you are starving yourself or have an eating disorder. #WordsOfWisdom
But what you could do is choose not to snack after the dinner the night before, not eat during the day and enjoy your evening out. That's called smart fasting!
