Fibromyalgia & CFS: Is Toxicity Affecting Your Ability to Sleep?

When we struggle with illnesses such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), sleep can be elusive at best.  Obviously, pain and medications can keep us up during the night, but what if there is actually something else going on? Something that is not only causing us sleep issues, but is actually a huge underlying factor contributing to our fibromyalgia and CFS to begin with? Is there a sleep and toxicity connection?

How Toxic is Your Mattress?

Chances are...pretty toxic! Especially a new mattress.

Have you bought a mattress lately? Notice the horrendous smell that it produced for days and weeks? The toxic smell? It's called 'off-gassing'.

Some of these vapours carry long-term risks for your health - particularly memory foam and other synthetic mattresses, which include formaldehyde, benzene, and naphthalene.

As well, most mattresses contain chemical flame retardants, which have been linked to a variety of serious health issues, including cancer, infertility, obesity and developmental brain disorders. You can find out more information about off-gassing here.

Toxic Overload & Toxic Body Burden

It Gets Worse…

On top of this, we are subjected to an average of 515 toxic chemicals in our body care products – EACH AND EVERY DAY.

This even includes baby care products!!! In fact, a certain, well-known, long-established brand, that starts with a 'J', has only removed formaldehyde from their products in the last few years – and they still have a way to go in regards to removing the rest of the toxic crud from their products.

Fibromyalgia, Medication, Your Liver...& You

Chances are if you have fibromyalgia and/or CFS you have been prescribed medication. In fact, chances are you have been prescribed a SH*TLOAD of medication.

Not only do those meds cause some pretty serious side effects that you are aware of, but they can also take an incredible toll on your liver, respiratory system, neurological function and much more.

In other words, many of these medications are potentially toxic to your system and they could be doing more harm than good!

 Toxic Overload Syndrome Symptoms

As you probably already know if you're reading this and have been living with fibromyalgia and/or CFS/ME, these symptoms look rather familiar, am I right?

Healthy fruits? Not quite! Look at the toxic residue...

How Toxicity Affects Sleep

Your toxic body burden affects your sleep in a variety of ways.

Firstly, your cortisol levels (‘flight or fright’ hormone) can be out of whack from the toxicity that is in your body…and your liver.

Your liver is your body’s filtration system. And it becomes clogged with what is known as mucoid plaque (read, ‘toxic sludge’) as does your colon and intestines.

Imagine your body attempting to rest, let alone absorb the proper vitamins, minerals and other nutrients when your system is clogged with this?

Parasites, another toxin, are thought to be in up to 85% of the western population. Not only can they eat the calcium on our bones, and burrow into our muscles, but they can also rob us of nutrients causing nutrient malabsorption.

The result?

Sleep issues, which can be caused by toxins such as heavy metals and fungus, ultimately means that your liver is struggling to work properly. And the more your liver struggles to work the more it can affect your sleep.

In fact, the toxic overload symptoms list reads like the list of symptoms for fibromyalgia and CFS!

How Toxic Are You?

Reducing Your Toxic Body Burden to Get a Better Sleep

There are many simple lifestyle changes that you can make to reduce your toxic body burden, such as making your own cleaners (here's a great recipe for an all-purpose non-toxic cleaner) and by also choosing natural, organic body care products.

Reducing your toxic body burden is one of the best ways to treat the sleep issues that go part and parcel with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

The issue is...

That there really is no way of getting away from toxicity in your life.  Even living in a plastic bubble, the plastic will probably be made from BPA!

How I Reduced my Toxins & Started Sleeping Like a Baby

...(and what radically changed my life from not getting sleep for 9 years and being on 40 pills A DAY for my fibromyalgia and CFS)...

I eventually learned about detoxing. I knew it was something that needed to be done, but I was not prepared to survive on kale smoothies, or lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup. For me, if I lasted a day, I would be lucky. (I like food, thank you very much!).

Fortunately, one of my Facebook friends with MS posted that within 2 weeks she had been able to come off a lot of her meds, lose 10 lbs and was feeling AWESOME. So, I HAD to ask her what she was doing!

She told me that she was doing a gentle detox tea and liver/colon cleanse called Te Divina Detox & Cleansing Tea.

I had been reading about ganoderma and chaga mushrooms as adaptogens, so when I came across this amazing product, well...it blew my cotton socks off!  And (wo)man.  Did I start sleeping like I hadn't sleep in years.

Seriously.
