What You Need to Know
When you’re on a mission for weight loss, it’s important to understand that your fat cells may have actually lost a good amount of fat within the cells…However, these cells have replaced the lost fat with water to keep their size.
This means that instead of shrinking your cells continue to be the same size…which means you weigh the same, look the same…
When in actual fact you have lost some serious fat…not to mention toxins.
The water replacement is just a temporary situation…the important thing is not to give up and throw the towel in when you see that the scales aren’t moving. Don’t give up!!!
Your body has gone into ‘defence mode’ from changing too rapidly. What is happening is that your body is allowing for a slow, gradual reduction in cell size instead of a rapid change in cell composition.

Anyways, weight loss is not the best thing to track in regards to how your cleanse is working…
We have had many clients who have not lost weight – or it has been ‘very slow’, then all of a sudden, testimonials saying they are down a dress size (or 3!).
That’s why measuring yourself before you start the detox is important – as it is a much better way to track your progress than weight loss, which for many can be a frustrating experience when they don’t see the scales moving…and then they give up!
Ignore the Scale Fluctuation!
Keep going…your real shape will slowly begin to show…honest. Be patient! Your body is changing even if the number on the scale isn’t.
Also, it’s important to remember that muscle weighs 5x MORE than fat! And takes up a lot less space and is more compact.

Weight Loss Patterns
The first 2 weeks can generally be a pretty fast and sometimes an enormous amount of weight loss can happen….then this is often followed by ‘stalls’ or a slower rate of weight loss to around 1 pound a week
Toxins love fat cells…and they also don’t want to let go! Which is another factor to not seeing weight loss happen on the scales – on top of the human body going into ‘protection mode’.
Your body is going to want to hold on tight to the fatty acids stored in your fat cells!
To start off with, during your induction water attached to the glycogen stores starts to jettison – accounting for 3-5 lbs of water. And then the muscle stores of glycogen are getting replaced, which will account for more weight loss.
Meanwhile, your body has gone into panic mode! And it starts shrieking ‘Warning, large amount of water being lost, don’t like this, got to get back to the status quo!’
Your Brain Kicks In
And then your brain starts getting involved. It starts releasing an anti-diuretic hormone called vasopressin…and then MORE water is retained and the scales aren’t moving. Meanwhile, fat loss is still happening!!!
And if you are following our recommended clean eating plan or taking it even further with a ketogenic diet, combined with the tea, appetite suppression starts to really kick in – but the water retention is hiding the continuing fat loss.
Meanwhile…fat loss is still occurring! In fact, you might be losing up to 2lbs a week of fat, but not seeing a difference on the scales! However, water retention is hiding this…your body is trying to prevent dehydration with this mechanism…that’s why drinking water is imperative to help flush the system of both toxins – and fat!
Water Retention Masks Fat Loss – Remember This!
Repeat this mantra: ‘Water retention masks fat loss’ (over and over again!) (repeated frequently to oneself).
Water retention will mask ongoing fat-loss for as long as the body retains the water.
Drink to Shrink
One of the best ways to lose weight is by drinking more water. And not only will this help with your weight loss, but it is one of the best ways to flush out toxins and reduce the effects of healing crisis symptoms such as fatigue, pain and headaches.
Strange as it sounds, the less water you drink, the more of it your body retains. If you are even slightly dehydrated your body will hang onto its water supplies with a vengeance, possibly causing the numbers on the scale to inch upward. The solution is to drink plenty of water.
…but we aren’t going to totally overcome the weight on the scales issue.
Addicted to the Scales?
How many times have you heard, ‘don’t weigh yourself everyday’?
And how many times have we completely ignored that?! (I have!). I also like to know (or think I know, what I can ‘get away with’ re ‘food cheats’. (I have now figured out that using the Vida Divina Cheat works a treat for, well treats).
There are many factors as to why the scales might not be moving, of which I have listed in a previous blog, here in regards to some tips to help…however, this blog is about why the actual scales might not be moving.
What You Need to Know
Daily fluctuations are normal and should not be indicators to your success or failure.
You will be dealing with water retention, changes in lean body mass, glycogen storage, and the obvious…whatever you eat and drink WEIGHS SOMETHING.
Your body is water…
It’s normal for your body’s water content to fluctuate…considering it is made up of 60% water!
And there are a variety of issues that can affect this…from not drinking enough water, to salt intake, to water retention prior to menstruation.
The Glycogen Factor
Another factor that can influence the scale is glycogen. Think of glycogen as a fuel tank full of stored carbohydrate. Some glycogen is stored in the liver and some is stored in the muscles themselves.
This energy reserve weighs more than a pound and it’s packaged with 3-4 pounds of water when it’s stored. Your glycogen supply will shrink during the day if you fail to take in enough carbohydrates.
As the glycogen supply shrinks you will experience a small imperceptible increase in appetite and your body will restore this fuel reserve along with it’s associated water. It’s normal to experience glycogen and water weight shifts of up to 2 pounds per day even with no changes in your calorie intake or activity level.
These fluctuations have nothing to do with fat loss, although they can make for some unnecessarily dramatic weigh-ins if you’re prone to obsessing over the number on the scale.
Food and beverages weigh something! What you eat and drink the moment it goes into your body will be the weight of what you consumed!
For this reason, it’s wise to weigh yourself first thing in the morning before you’ve had anything to eat or drink.
Generally, it’s only possible to lose 1-2 pounds of fat per week.
If you are still attached to the scales, there are more things to look out for in regards to tweaking your detox. Things like sweeteners, not eating enough protein, and healthy fat, and too many carbs as examples can all affect your weight loss journey.
